A sterling
reputation among Sapporoans for our history of significant achievements
In 1986, the International Japanese Language Institute of
Sapporo became the first language school in Hokkaido
Prefecture to establish a Japanese language program. Some
180 students from 24 countries are learning here, and our
alumni exceed 1,000. Many have gone on to study at
Japanese universities -- more than 80% in recent years.
The school stands near the unspoiled natural surroundings
of Maruyama Park in Sapporo, one of Japan's largest
cities. The Maruyama district is known as an educational
area for the many schools and cultural facilities that
concentrate here. This location, in a sophisticated
residential area and not crowded in a building with other
organizations, provides an ideal environment for students
to focus on their studies. The school also boasts
excellent access. A short walk brings you to Maruyama
Koen Subway Station, which is ten minutes by subway from
downtown Sapporo.
Lessons are conducted in small classes organized
according to the student's level. For those wishing to
become Japanese language instructors, we have established
a program for teaching Japanese as a foreign language.
Many Japanese students are learning under this program.
These settings enable students to take lessons suited to
their individual levels and to enjoy opportunities to use
the Japanese they have just learned.
We endeavor to offer an ideal study environment and
education for people wishing to enter Japanese
universities or to use their Japanese in the workplace.

A city ideal for Japanese study
Its population of more than 1.8 million makes Sapporo the
fifth largest city in Japan. Japanese and non-Japanese
alike rank the city at the top of their wish list of
places to live in Japan. Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter
Olympic Games and will host a soccer game of the 2002
FIFA World Cup. It was in the late 19th century that the
city began to import skills and ideas from the West for
its city development projects. This means that Sapporo
has been open to the world from the very beginning.
Establishing sister-city affiliations with Portland (U.S.A.),
Munich (Germany), Shenyang (China) and Novosibirsk (Russia),
Sapporo has been actively pursuing international
exchanges. It also organizes international events,
including the Pacific Music Festival held every summer,
and the Sapporo Snow Festival.
Many of Japan's leading companies have established
branches in Sapporo and more than 100 schools of higher
learning are located here. There are also many cultural
facilities (concert halls, art museums, libraries) that
organize various events for citizens. Residents live
safely and comfortably in this city, where consumer
prices and crime rates are much lower than in Tokyo.
Warmhearted citizens cordially welcome people of other
countries, and the Japanese language here is much closer to
standard Japanese than are dialects spoken elsewhere.
Distinct
attractions in each season, for a truly enjoyable stay
Sapporo is a beautiful city that has achieved harmony with nature. Odori
Park and the Botanical Garden are right in the city center. Summers are
relatively cool, making Sapporo ideal for travelers. In winter, people
come here to enjoy skiing and snowboarding. The Sapporo Snow Festival,
Yosakoi Soran Festival, sumo tournaments and other events are held around
the year, attracting domestic and overseas visitors alike. Although many
people anticipate extremely cold winter weather, the mean temperature
is minus 4 degree centigrade, even in February, the coldest month. Winter life is
not very hard, because of the well-developed mass transit system, intensive
snow removal, and architecture suited to cold weather. You will be able
to enjoy urban life fully in every season.

Educational Policies
Educational /
occupational guidance
Our three curricula fit students' goals: One curriculum
is for students aiming for higher education, one for
those wishing to acquire conversational Japanese skills
and one for those hoping to become Japanese language
instructors. We offer guidance on studies and entrance
examinations, to help students realize their ambitions.
Classes organized
by achievement level
Each course is taught in classes divided into elementary,
intermediate and advanced levels, for efficient study.
One class consists of 12 to 20 students, to ensure one-to-one
instruction. Also, we have established a Japanese
language instructor's course in which many prospective
Japanese instructors are learning. Exchanges with these
Japanese students will serve as good opportunities to
acquire practical Japanese skills.
Assisting students
in accommodating to Japanese life and customs
Learning a different language means immersing oneself in
a different culture. Lessons are designed to help you
increase knowledge of Japan's traditional culture and
modern society. Every school staff member and instructor
stands constantly ready to support you in overcoming
culture shock or other challenges. Talking to your
colleagues is also very helpful in adjusting to a new
life in Japan.
